Breaking HBO TV Show News of the Day: HBO announced today that it will be picking up Laura Dern and Mike White’s critically acclaimed dramedy series Enlightened for a second season.

In the same breath, HBO was the bearer of bad news for fans of Hung, Bored to Death, and How to Make It in America — all three of which were canceled.

Both Hung and Bored To Death lasted three seasons; How To Make It in America ends its run after only two.

In addition to giving the low-rated-but-highly-praised Enlightened another shot, HBO recently picked up a slew of new shows to accompany the anticipated mid-season returns of Eastbound & Down and The Life and Times of Tim

Armando Ianucci’s Veep, Lena Dunham’s Girls, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant’s Life’s Too Short, and Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys are all set to begin airing next year.

Hung and How to Make it both sucked. I mean, we can all agree on that - but Bored to Death??? Damn. A show I truly loved and one of the only shows that had a distinct vibe to it. Great acting, great writing, and an insider-y New York feel made that show fun to watch every week.

I’m not saying I’m not excited to see the new shows on the HBO schedule, but keeping Enlightened and cancelling Bored to Death is really unenlightened programming. But I guess HBO has to cater to it’s core audience of middle aged suburban woman.
